A Brief Overview
Responsible for assisting the hemodialysis nurse by performing delegated tasks, including accessing AV fistula or graft, the initiation, monitoring and termination of hemodialysis treatments for the hemodialysis patient in the acute/chronic hemodialysis unit, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Responsible for the mixing and performing quality control checks of the bicarbonate loop system, dialysis machines and portable RO's as per unit policy. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What you will do
- Assists in the assessment, preparation and initiation of treatment of assigned hemodialysis patient under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.
- Performs tasks to monitor patient during dialysis procedure and prepare patient for discharge following termination of the dialysis treatment.
- Performs other non-nursing patient care tasks as delegated or assigned.
- Promotes quality care and cost effectiveness within the department through proper utilization of equipment, supplies and labor.
- Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement, including self-development and enhancement of professional competency.
- Maintains safe environment for patients, Associates and visitors.
- Performs other job functions as assigned.
Education/Formal Training Requirements
- Required - High School Diploma or Equivalent
Work Experience Requirements
- Required - Dialysis or nephrology unit as a dialysis tech 1-3 years
- Preferred - Experience in a patient care setting as a patient care technician 1-3 years
Licenses and Certifications Requirements
- Required - BASIC LIFE SUPPORT - American Heart Association
- Required - Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician - Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission
- Preferred - Certified in Clinical Nephrology Technology - National Nephrology Certification Organization, Inc
- Preferred - Certified Hemodialysis Technician - Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the care of ESRD/dialysis patients in a dialysis or nephrology unit or knowledge of the care of patients in a patient care setting.
- Basic knowledge of intravenous therapy methods.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
- Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as patient records.
- Ability to understand and perform moderately complex tasks such as mixing bicarbonate and granuflo and performing quality control checks on water system, bicarbonate, and granuflo.
- Ability to cannulate AV graft or fistula as acquired through venipuncture training.
- Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of frequent complications (i.e. hypotension, cramping) in dialysis patients during the dialysis treatment and respond appropriately until nurse responds.
- Ability to communicate verbally with patients, patients families, associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
- Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgement. Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of workflow.

- There are no lead or supervisory responsibilities assigned to this job.
Physical Demands
- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
- Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
